How many people do you see wearing a watch anymore? Although there are people who like and use watches there are many who use other methods of telling time and/or feel like watches are obsolete. There are cell phones now that give you the time but not always reliable. Technology has advanced to where watches not only tell you time but can have other advantages. There are watches that have calculators in them, can tell you the temperature, what day it is, alarms and some even have a compass.

Another reason to wear watches is because it’s always been classy. When the watch was first invented those who wear them were considered wealthy and/or well known. Think of a business man in a suit and tie. What completes the look? What makes it look even more professional? The watch! The watch has and still does play a role in our history. Not just in real life but even in movies. All the spy movies like James Bond used watches. It-s a must have item.

You may think they’re old fashioned or antiquated. The truth is that our society still uses them today. Watches aren’t just a thing of the past.

Purchasing a watch can be an important event. Often making the right selection will depend heavily on your lifestyle, profession and daily schedule. If you work with the public or are in a high visibility position such as sales and/or marketing, sometimes a can be tool for attracting clients. In fact, one of the things that people look at on job interviews is your watch. It leaves a lasting impression, so when making your selection you want to make a wise choice. Didn’t catch that? This explains it. I usually like to go for something that is a classic look. It can be simple, inexpensive and reliable while looking like a piece of jewelry. If I am on a tight budget, I will find a durable waterproof inexpensive stainless steel piece that matches a bracelet or looks like one. I have a knack for finding watches that have a kind of universal look, they can be worn with a suite, t- shirt or dress shirt and still look great. Department stores and superstores are the best places to find the inexpensive line of designer watches. These are purposely designed to fit all of the above listed requirements and still adhere to a budget. Often you can catch a sale and buy two, a sporty watch and a classic one.

There are better places to look for watches than on your Direct TV but not so fast. Everyone from movie stars to sports stars are flashing some of the blingiest, fanciest watches around which makes Hollywood one of the best places for trend spotting in the watch world. Here are a few of our favorite time-piece wearing celebs:

David Beckham – Since he spends most of his professional career wearing a dirty soccer uniform Beckham tends to overdress a bit in his personal life. Watches are one of his favorite accessories and Rolex appears to be his brand. He was sporting the new gold XL at a press conference back in June.

Daniel Craig – Everyone wants to know what kind of watch James Bond wears, right? Well Daniel Craig’s favorite appears to be his Rolex sub on a nylon band. Classic but casual: just how we like our Bond.

Bill Clinton – Okay, so he-s not a movie star but you’ve got to admit the former prez has style. The Panerai seems to have become one of his favorite brands and he’s been sporting the silver faced everywhere from England to the Hamptons this year.

Do you keep track of time by studying watches? Are you a person who loves to learn about the history and workmanship of particular watches? There is nothing quite so fascinating, than the natural beauty of a unique timepiece. Time has always been part of man’s language. Even the most primitive of societies, have developed ways to communicate by it. Today, watches are sill an important part of our lives. The type of watch you wear signifies part of your personality. There is a style for everyone. Watchmakers have known this for ages.

Watchmakers used to have to travel to an exact spot to get the correct time. Today, the practice has become easier with technology. Still, each watchmaker today, tries to customize their line to make their unique mark on today’s society. There are so many different elements of a watch to consider.

Watches are classic timepieces that still have a lasting appeal to many audiences. Some basic features have stood the test of time for many years. At the same time, technology changes at an alarmingly fast pace. This has led to an emergence of more new and popular features for watches than ever before.

Probably one of the most popular new features to come about in the watch market is GPS locating. Now you can use your watch to check your location or track your route on a map. Many sports enthusiasts will love this feature because it enables them to train using nothing but their watch as a guide. Many GPS equipped watches allow you to view a summary of your route and set new routes for running and jogging. Along the same lines, many watchmakers are now featuring calorie counters and heart rate monitors designed with the user in mind. Needless to say sports enthusiasts will probably beging to appreciate the watch market more than ever.

Even more intriguing than the GPS feature is a recently introduced wireless technology feature. Only a select few manufacturers offer this feature but it is sure to be a hit. This technology allows the owner to transfer data automatically between a computer and the watch making it a fantastic new way to save important information. Also it should be no surprise that watches are now coming out with video and picture viewing capabilities. With all of these new features techies of the next generation will be delighted to see that a timeless classic can be a modern as well.

The first watches were made in Germany in the 16th century, and were actually pendant clock-watches. No, Flavor Flav was not the first to wear these. Anyway, clock-watches were very big, expensive, jewel-encrusted deals in those days, so they were only worn by the very wealthy.

With the introduction of the waistcoat in the 17th century, clock-watches began to be replaced by pocket watches. While the accuracy of these timepieces still wasn’t very great, and they continued to lack a minute hand, at least they didn’t make people look like gangsta rappers. Of course, they were still handmade at this time, but by the mid-19th century, pocket watches were being mass-produced on a large scale.

The 19th century also saw the creation of the first wristwatch. While these were originally designed as women’s jewelry, by the early 20th century, men were starting to wear them, too. After a few decades, pocket watches were no longer cool.

So there we have it. From here, it’s only a short step to the 1950′s and the first electric watches. By the end of the next decade we had quartz, and by the early 1990′s we’re fully radio-controlled. Really, I’m not winding you up.
