How to Know if A Vintage Watch Is Real

Watches are more than just clocks on your wrist to many people. They can be fashion statements, shows of wealth and even storytellers. There is a huge market for watches and it keeps growing day after day. Along with the legitimate watches for sale, the market for counterfeit watches grows day after day as well. What-s even worse is that counterfeiters are getting a lot better at making their fake look legit. So how can you tell when a vintage watch is a real?

Make sure you only shop at well-known and reputable stores. Most of these storeowners won-t sell a fake for fear of ruining their reputation. Avoid buying them online as well. It-s easy to be fooled by an online picture and you almost always pay before seeing the item up close.

If you still end up with a suspicious watch in your hands, look over it for anything out of place. Some really shoddy counterfeits will have spelling errors or obviously fake precious metals or even something slightly more subtle like using the wrong font.

For the more detail-oriented counterfeiter, however, it can look perfectly fine. It can look perfectly fine on the outside, anyway. Usually the red flag is hidden within the watch. Carefully open the back to view the mechanism and see if you spot anything shady like engraving that states the part was made in a country that had no part in the original-s creation or lack of serial numbers. If you-re able, pull up a picture of the mechanism from the Internet and compare the two.

If everything still looks good, but you-re still worried, don-t be hesitant to take it to a trustworthy watch store to get it looked over by an expert. It may take a while, but it-s worth it.
